CVS Health Quitting Process

Quitting CVS Health: Answers to Every Question You Actually Have

Nearly 900 CVS stores have closed since 2021, with another 271 shutting down in 2025 alone. If you are one of the roughly 300,000 CVS employees thinking about leaving, you are far from alone. And if you are trying to figure out which portal to even use for your resignation (CVS has changed its HR system name three times in recent years), you have come to the right place.

Now here is the detail behind each of those answers.

How Do I Actually Resign From CVS?

Talk to your store manager or pharmacy manager in person. CVS does not have a self-service resignation button. Your manager processes the separation through Workday, which is the current backend HR system.

Write down your last day and hand it to your manager or send it in an email. Keep your own copy. Two weeks is the expected notice period, though CVS is an at-will employer and no law forces you to give any.

If you work at a MinuteClinic, your resignation goes through the clinic’s district manager and follows the same Workday process.

Which Portal Is the Right One? CVS Changed Everything.

This is probably the most confusing part of working at CVS in 2026. Here is the current state of things:

Colleague Zone is the active portal for current employees. This replaced the old MyHR system. You can check your schedule, view pay stubs, and manage benefits here. It connects to Workday on the backend.

MyHR (myhr.cvs.com) is no longer for current employees. It has been repurposed as the CVS Alumni Zone for former employees. When you leave, this is where you will go for W-2s and old pay records.

Workday is the HR/payroll engine under the hood. Your manager uses it. You may also access it through the Enterprise Login for some functions.

Before your last day, log into Colleague Zone and download your recent pay stubs. Once your employee ID is deactivated (usually within 24 to 48 hours of your separation date), you lose access. For the full portal breakdown, see CVS login portals.

Does CVS Pay Out My PTO When I Quit?

It depends on your state and your tenure.

CVS offers 20 to 30 days of PTO per year depending on your role and how long you have been there, but there is a catch: you do not earn any PTO during your first 6 months of employment. If you are quitting before that 6-month mark, there is nothing to pay out.

After 6 months, your accrued PTO payout follows these rules:

In states that legally require PTO payout (California, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, and others), CVS must include your unused balance in your final check. No exceptions, no matter how you left.

In states without mandatory payout, CVS’s internal policy generally pays accrued PTO to employees who resign with proper notice. Quitting without notice in those states may mean forfeiting the balance.

Check your PTO balance on Colleague Zone before you give notice, and look up your state’s rules. Full details at CVS PTO policies.

When Will I Get My Last Paycheck?

CVS pays biweekly. Your final check arrives on the next scheduled payday after your last shift. Direct deposit continues for the final payment if you had it set up.

Some states (California, for example) require that your final check be issued on your last day if you gave 72 hours’ notice, or within 72 hours if you did not. Most states give the employer until the next regular payday. Know your state’s rule at CVS final paycheck laws.

What Happens to My Health Insurance and Benefits?

Health coverage runs through the end of the month in which your employment ends. Quit on April 5, you are covered through April 30. A COBRA notice will arrive in the mail within about 14 days. COBRA lets you keep the same plan for up to 18 months, but you take on the full premium.

401(k): CVS matches dollar-for-dollar up to 5% of your pay. That match is yours immediately since CVS does not have a vesting schedule for the match (it is 100% vested from day one). Your account stays in the plan until you decide to roll it over to a new employer or an IRA. Learn more at what happens to your 401k when you quit.

Employee discount (up to 30% off name-brand, 20% off store-brand, 20% off cvs.com): Deactivated the day your employment ends. Do not use your discount card or employee number for purchases after your last day.

ExtraCare card: Your ExtraCare rewards card still works as a regular customer card. You just lose the employee-specific earning rates.

Bereavement leave, sick time, paid holidays: These stop on your last day. CVS offers 7 paid holidays for full-time employees and 3 paid bereavement days. None of these carry financial value after separation.

How Do I Get My W-2 After I Leave?

This is the single most common complaint from former CVS employees, and the portal transition has made it worse.

After you leave, CVS sends two automated emails to your personal email on file (not your work email). One contains your username for the Alumni Zone, and the other contains a temporary password. These are supposed to arrive within 24 to 48 hours of your separation, but they frequently go to spam folders or do not arrive at all.

If you do not get them, go to myhr.cvs.com and try the “Forgot Password” option with your 7-digit Employee ID. If that fails, call 1-866-528-7272 and ask for W-2 access help. Have your Employee ID, SSN, and date of birth ready.

Your W-2 will also be mailed to the address on file by January 31. Make sure that address is current before you leave. More at CVS W-2 for former employees.

Can I Get Rehired at CVS After Quitting?

Yes, with conditions:

  • Resigned with two weeks’ notice, no issues: Eligible to reapply immediately at most locations.
  • Resigned without notice: Typically a 90-day to 6-month waiting period.
  • Terminated for performance: 6 to 12 months in most cases.
  • Terminated for theft, harassment, or safety violations: Permanent “do not rehire” flag.

Keep in mind that with 271 stores closing in 2025 and more closures expected, available positions are shrinking. Being rehire-eligible does not guarantee there is an open role near you.

What If I Am Being Laid Off Because My Store Is Closing?

You are not quitting. A store closure is a layoff, and the distinction matters for unemployment benefits. If CVS closes your store and does not offer you a comparable position at a nearby location, you should be eligible for unemployment in most states.

Your separation code should reflect a layoff or reduction in force, not a voluntary resignation. Confirm this with your district manager before your last day. If it is coded wrong, it can delay or deny your unemployment claim. For guidance, see how to file unemployment after being fired.

Before You Walk Out: Final Steps

  • Download pay stubs from Colleague Zone (you lose access fast).
  • Update your mailing address in the system for your W-2.
  • Return your name badge, keys, and any company-issued equipment.
  • Write down HR’s number: 1-866-528-7272. Full contact details at CVS HR contact guide.
  • Check your personal email for the Alumni Zone login within 48 hours of your last day. If it does not arrive, do not wait. Call HR.

CVS is going through a lot right now, and the HR systems reflect that. Portal names change, automated emails fail, and store-level managers are juggling more than they used to. Protect yourself by downloading your records early, confirming your separation code, and keeping HR’s phone number handy.
