Fixing the Most Common CVS Benefits Problems
The deadline for CVS Health open enrollment comes and goes every year, and every year the same problems trip people up. The portal name changed. PTO balances didn’t transfer right. Nobody’s sure if they’re supposed to use Colleague Zone, Workday, or the old MyHR. If you’re dealing with any of that, you’re in the right place.
Quick Reference: CVS Benefits at a Glance
Benefit | What You Get | Eligibility |
Medical/dental/vision | Multiple plan tiers | FT (30+ hrs): after waiting period |
401(k) match | Dollar-for-dollar up to 5% | After eligibility period |
Store discount | Up to 30% name-brand, 20% store-brand, 20% cvs.com | Active employees |
PTO | 20-30 days/year (varies by role/tenure) | FT after 6 months |
Paid holidays | 7 per year | Full-time |
Bereavement | 3 paid days | All employees |
Tuition assistance | Available for eligible programs | After waiting period |
Now let’s get into the details and sort out the confusion.
The Portal Problem: Where Do You Actually Go?
CVS has changed its HR portal name multiple times in recent years, and this causes real headaches. Here’s the current situation:
Current employees should use Colleague Zone, which connects to Workday on the backend. This is where you’ll find your benefits enrollment, pay stubs, and plan details. You log in through the Enterprise Login system using your 7-digit Employee ID.
Former employees get redirected to the CVS Alumni Zone, which still uses the old myhr.cvs.com address. When you leave CVS, the system is supposed to send two automated emails to your personal email address within 24-48 hours. One contains your username, the other a temporary password. These emails don’t always arrive, which is the number one complaint from former CVS employees trying to access their W-2s or benefits information.
If you can’t get into the portal, call 1-866-528-7272. For more detailed login help, check the CVS Health login portals guide.
Health Insurance at CVS Health
CVS offers medical, dental, and vision plans for full-time employees (30+ hours per week). The company is a healthcare organization itself, operating MinuteClinic locations and owning Aetna, so the health plan options tend to be more extensive than what you’d find at a standard retailer.
Plan options typically include PPO, HMO, and high-deductible health plans with HSA options. Premiums vary by plan tier and coverage level. Because CVS owns Aetna, many of the medical plans are administered through Aetna’s network.
Dental and vision are separate enrollments. CVS employees who fill prescriptions at CVS pharmacies often get better pricing through their employee prescription benefit, which makes sense given the company’s pharmacy focus.
Open enrollment runs once per year, usually in the fall. If you miss it, you’ll need a qualifying life event to make changes. Enrollment happens through Colleague Zone/Workday. The transition from the old MyHR system caused some PTO balance transfer issues, so double-check your accrued time in the new system against your records.
The 401(k) Match
CVS matches dollar for dollar up to 5% of your eligible pay. That’s one of the strongest matches in retail and pharmacy. The match is the same structure as Target’s, and better than what most grocery and drugstore competitors offer.
Both full-time and eligible part-time employees can participate after meeting service requirements. If you’re not contributing at least 5%, you’re passing on free compensation. At a salary of $30,000, that 5% match is worth $1,500 per year in employer contributions.
One thing that catches people off guard: there may be a vesting schedule on the employer match. Check your plan documents in Colleague Zone to see how long you need to stay before the match is fully yours. If you’re planning to leave CVS soon, this matters.

PTO: Good Once You Get Past the Waiting Period
CVS employees can earn 20-30 days per year of PTO depending on role and tenure. That range is solid for the retail and pharmacy industry. The catch is the 6-month waiting period before you can use any PTO at all. If you start in January, you won’t have usable PTO until July. You’re accruing during that time, but you can’t actually take days off.
Full-time employees get 7 paid holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and one floating holiday. That’s notably better than Walgreens, which eliminated all 6 of its paid holidays in November 2025.
CVS also provides 3 paid bereavement days for the loss of an immediate family member.

The Employee Discount
The CVS employee discount is one of the best in retail. You get:
- Up to 30% off name-brand products
- 20% off CVS store-brand products
- 20% off purchases on cvs.com
- ExtraCare points earnings on purchases
That 30% on name-brand items is hard to beat. For comparison, Walgreens employees get a discount on store-brand items, but the specifics are in flux under new ownership. Target offers 10% on most items with 20% on wellness products. CVS employees buying household goods, OTC medications, and beauty products at 20-30% off can save meaningful money over the course of a year.
The discount applies to in-store and online purchases. There are some exclusions (pharmacy, alcohol where applicable, and certain regulated items), but the coverage is broad.

Other Benefits to Know About
Tuition assistance: CVS offers educational support for eligible employees pursuing approved programs. The specifics (dollar caps, eligible schools, waiting periods) should be confirmed through Colleague Zone. It’s not as publicized as Walmart’s Live Better U or Target’s Dream to Be, but it exists.
Life insurance: Basic coverage at no cost for full-time employees. Supplemental coverage available during open enrollment.
EAP: Free confidential counseling sessions for employees and household members. Covers mental health, financial advice, and legal consultations.
MinuteClinic access: As a CVS employee, you have convenient access to MinuteClinic services, though the cost depends on your insurance plan.
Disability insurance: Short-term and long-term disability coverage available for full-time employees.
Store closure impact: CVS has closed 271 stores in 2025, with over 900 closed since 2021. About 9,000 stores remain. If your store closes, your benefits may be affected. Contact HR at 1-866-528-7272 for information specific to your situation. Review the CVS Health benefits after termination page and COBRA options after job loss to understand your rights.
