CVS Health Final Paycheck Laws

Published:

Nearly a third of former CVS employees report confusion about which portal even has their final pay information. That’s not surprising given that CVS has cycled through MyHR, Colleague Zone, and Workday in just a few years, and the correct system depends on when you left. Your final paycheck rights, though, don’t change with the portal name. They’re set by your state.

Now here are the details behind each common question.

Where Do I Find My Final Paycheck Information?

This depends on whether you’re a current or former employee, and it’s the single biggest source of confusion at CVS.

If you’re still employed or just separated: Log into Colleague Zone through Workday. Go to Pay, then Tax Documents or Pay Statements. Your 7-digit Employee ID is your login credential.

If you’ve been gone for a while: CVS creates an Alumni Zone account automatically. Within 24-48 hours of your separation, two emails should arrive at your personal email address (the one on file, not your CVS email). One contains your username, the other a temporary password. The old myhr.cvs.com URL now redirects to the Alumni Zone.

The problem? Those auto-emails don’t always arrive. Check spam folders first. If nothing shows up after 48 hours, call 1-866-528-7272 with your Employee ID ready.

Does CVS Pay Out Unused PTO?

CVS offers 20-30 days per year depending on role and tenure, but you can’t use any PTO during your first 6 months. Whether unused PTO gets paid out in your final check depends on your state.

States that require payout: California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, and several others mandate that accrued, unused vacation be included in your final paycheck. CVS must comply regardless of internal policy.

States without payout laws: CVS has historically paid out accrued vacation in most cases, but policies have shifted during the recent round of store closures (271 in 2025 alone, on top of 900+ since 2021). Don’t assume it will happen automatically. Check your final stub against your last known PTO balance.

You can find more about how CVS accrues and manages time off in the CVS PTO policies guide.

What If I Was Laid Off Because My Store Closed?

CVS has closed over 900 stores since 2021, with 271 more in 2025. A store closure is legally treated as an involuntary termination, which means the faster deadlines apply in states like California, Colorado, and Massachusetts.

If your store closed and you were offered a transfer to another location, your separation type depends on whether you accepted. Declining a reasonable transfer offer might be coded as a voluntary quit in some states, which could affect both your final paycheck timing and your unemployment eligibility.

Ask your district manager or HR rep exactly how your separation is being classified. Get it in writing if you can.

Can CVS Deduct Things from My Final Paycheck?

CVS cannot deduct for lost name badges, uniform items, or register shortages unless you signed a specific, standalone written authorization. The general employee handbook acknowledgment doesn’t count in most states.

Review your final stub carefully. Compare every line item to a previous pay stub. New deductions that weren’t there before should be questioned immediately through HR at 1-866-528-7272.

My Final Paycheck Is Late. What Are My Options?

First, confirm the legal deadline has actually passed. Count from your last working day (for termination in same-day states) or from the next scheduled payday (in most other states).

Then try these steps in order:

  1. Check Colleague Zone/Workday or Alumni Zone to see if the payment was processed.
  2. Call 1-866-528-7272 and ask specifically about final paycheck status. Have your Employee ID, store number, and separation date handy.
  3. If CVS confirms the check was mailed, ask for the mailing date and address. Paper checks sent to an old address are a common issue.
  4. File a wage claim with your state’s Department of Labor if CVS has missed the deadline and can’t resolve it. States like California impose waiting time penalties (one day’s wages per day late, up to 30 days), which gives CVS strong motivation to pay quickly once a claim is filed.

Do I Still Get My Employee Discount on Purchases Before My Last Day?

Your CVS employee discount (up to 30% off name-brand, 20% off store-brand) stays active through your final working day. After separation, it’s gone. There’s no retiree discount program and no grace period.

Stock up on what you need before your last shift. That 30% name-brand discount is the best in retail pharmacy, and you won’t get it back.

What Happens to My 401(k) and Benefits?

CVS matches 401(k) contributions dollar-for-dollar up to 5%, and that money is yours. After separation, you can leave the balance where it is, roll it over to a new employer’s plan or an IRA, or cash it out (with tax penalties if you’re under 59½).

Health insurance ends at the end of the month in which you separate, and COBRA paperwork typically arrives within 14 days. Learn more in the CVS benefits after termination guide.
