If You Can’t Find Your Burger King Benefits, There’s a Reason

You’ve searched “Burger King employee benefits” and found generic answers about health insurance and 401(k) plans. Then you tried to log into the portal someone online mentioned, and it didn’t recognize your credentials. You asked your coworker, and they use a completely different system. None of this is your fault.

Burger King operates almost entirely through franchise owners. There are over 7,000 Burger King locations in the U.S., and the vast majority are independently owned. Each franchise operator chooses their own payroll system, benefits provider, and HR platform. There is no single Burger King benefits portal. There is no universal Burger King health insurance plan. What you get depends entirely on who owns your restaurant.

This is the most important thing to understand about Burger King benefits, and it’s the reason most online advice about BK benefits is useless without knowing your franchise.

First step: Figure out which franchise company owns your location. Ask your general manager. The name will appear on your pay stub. Common franchise operators include Carrols Restaurant Group, GPS Hospitality, EYM Group, and dozens of smaller operators.

Benefits at Major Burger King Franchise Operators

Since benefits vary by franchise, here’s what the larger operators typically offer:

Carrols Restaurant Group (largest BK franchisee): Uses ADP for payroll. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision for eligible employees. 401(k) available. Meal discounts during shifts. Contact: payroll@carrols.com or +1-315-479-5548. W-2s and pay stubs through carrols.com/Home/Employee.

GPS Hospitality: Uses UltiPro/InfoSync. Offers health insurance and basic benefits for full-time employees. Meal discounts.

EYM Group: Uses Kronos for timekeeping. Benefits package for eligible workers.

BKC Corporate locations (company-owned stores): Paystub access through paystubportal.com/bkc using Employee ID and PIN. Corporate stores tend to have the most structured benefits, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), and PTO.

Smaller franchise operators (and there are hundreds) may offer minimal benefits or none beyond what’s legally required. Some small independent franchisees with fewer than 50 full-time employees are not required by the ACA to offer health insurance at all.

The Meal Benefit

The one benefit that’s fairly consistent across franchises: free or discounted meals during your shift. The exact terms vary. Some locations give you one free meal per shift. Others offer 50% off. Some cap the dollar amount. A few require you to be clocked in when you order.

This isn’t listed in any corporate benefits guide because it’s a franchise-by-franchise decision. But for BK employees earning $10-15 per hour, a free meal per shift has real value. Over a five-day work week, that’s $25-40 worth of food you don’t have to buy.

Health Insurance: How to Find Out If You Have It

Here’s how to determine your health insurance situation:

  1. Check your pay stub for any deductions labeled “medical,” “dental,” or “health”
  2. Ask your general manager what benefits the franchise offers
  3. Contact your franchise’s HR department (not Burger King corporate; they won’t have your information)
  4. Check the payroll portal your franchise uses (ADP, Paylocity, Paycom, UltiPro, etc.) for a benefits section

If your franchise offers health insurance, you’ll typically need to be full-time (30+ hours) and complete a waiting period. Open enrollment periods vary by franchise.

If your franchise does not offer health insurance, you have other options. You may qualify for coverage through the ACA Marketplace (healthcare.gov) or through Medicaid in your state. Many BK employees earning under $20,000 per year qualify for subsidized Marketplace plans or Medicaid in states with expanded coverage. Don’t assume you have to go without insurance just because your franchise doesn’t provide it.

For dental and vision, the situation is the same: some franchises offer it, some don’t. If yours doesn’t, you can purchase standalone dental and vision plans through the Marketplace or through third-party providers.

The Payroll System Maze

Part of the benefits confusion comes from the sheer number of payroll systems in use across Burger King franchises. Here are the most common ones:

  • ADP (my.adp.com): Used by Carrols and many mid-size operators
  • Sage ESS (ess.burgerk.com): Some corporate and franchise locations
  • Paylocity: Growing in popularity among newer franchise groups
  • Paycom: Used by some Southern and Midwest operators
  • UltiPro/UKG: Used by GPS Hospitality
  • Kronos: Used by EYM Group for timekeeping
  • Money Network: Pay card system at some locations
  • Adams Keegan Efficenter: Regional franchise payroll
  • AllianceHCM: Another regional option

Your W-2 will come through whichever system your franchise uses. If you can’t find your W-2, start with the payroll system listed above that matches your pay stub. For more help, see the Burger King W-2 forms guide and the Burger King login portals guide.

401(k) and Retirement

Larger franchise operators (Carrols, GPS Hospitality) typically offer 401(k) plans. Smaller operators may not. The match, vesting schedule, and eligibility all depend on your specific franchise.

If you do have access to a 401(k), the same advice applies as everywhere: contribute at least enough to capture the full match, if one exists. If you change locations or franchise operators, your 401(k) may or may not transfer. Check with your new franchise’s HR.

PTO: Don’t Assume You Have Any

Warning: PTO at Burger King varies entirely by franchise. Large franchise operators like Carrols and GPS Hospitality typically offer basic PTO packages for full-time employees. Smaller independent operators may offer nothing beyond legally required sick leave.

Don’t assume your PTO transfers if you move to a different Burger King location owned by a different franchise. You’re effectively changing employers, even though the restaurant name stays the same. Your accrued PTO, your seniority, and your benefits eligibility all reset if the new location has a different franchise owner.

For the details on time off, see the Burger King PTO policies page.

Moving Between Franchise Locations

BK employees sometimes transfer to another location thinking it’s a simple move. If both locations are owned by the same franchise operator, the transfer is usually smooth. Your benefits, seniority, and pay rate carry over.

But if you’re moving to a location owned by a different franchise, it’s treated as a brand new hire. New application, new payroll system, new benefits eligibility waiting periods, new everything. Your employee discount (if your old franchise offered one) and your PTO balance do not carry over. Ask before you make the switch.

If You’re Thinking About Leaving

Because benefits vary so widely by franchise, leaving Burger King has different implications depending on where you work. If your franchise offered health insurance, you’ll have COBRA options or can explore the ACA Marketplace. If your franchise didn’t offer insurance, there’s nothing to continue.

Review the Burger King benefits after termination page for general guidance. For your 401(k) (if you had one), see what happens to your 401(k) when you quit.

What Burger King Corporate (RBI) Provides

Burger King is owned by Restaurant Brands International (RBI), which also owns Tim Hortons, Popeyes, and Firehouse Subs. RBI sets brand standards and marketing but does not control individual franchise benefits.

RBI’s “Reclaim the Flame” turnaround plan has focused on restaurant renovations, menu updates, and marketing. Employee benefits at the franchise level have not been a focus of this campaign.
