Kohl’s Benefits After Termination

Unlike most department stores, Kohl’s lets employees stack their 15% discount with Kohl’s Cash and customer coupons, making the effective discount one of the strongest in retail. That stacking power disappears the day you leave.

A 15% employee discount doesn’t sound like much on paper. But if you have been at Kohl’s for any length of time, you know the real savings come from combining that 15% with Kohl’s Cash earnings, percentage-off coupons, and sale prices. On a good day, you could pay 40% to 50% less than the sticker price. That entire system stops working the moment your employment ends.

Here is what happens to all of your Kohl’s benefits, broken down by scenario.

If you quit on your own terms

Your 15% employee discount ends on your last day. Your spouse’s access through the discount also ends. The corporate rates portal with partner deals deactivates.

Health insurance runs through the last day of the month of your separation. COBRA is available for up to 18 months at full cost plus 2%. The Marketplace at healthcare.gov is the alternative, with a 60-day Special Enrollment Period.

Your 401(k) stays in the plan. Check your vesting status to know how much of Kohl’s match contributions are yours. Standard rollover options apply. See what happens to your 401(k) when you quit.

PTO payout depends on your state. Kohl’s headquarters is in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, which does not mandate PTO payout. If you worked in a state that does (California, Colorado, etc.), your accrued vacation must be on your final check.

Do this: Before your last day, use your discount on anything you’ve been putting off. Stock up on basics. The 15% plus any active Kohl’s Cash or coupons won’t be available again.

Don’t do this: Don’t assume your Kohl’s charge card stops working. The card itself is a regular credit card that remains active. You just lose the employee discount tied to it.

If you were terminated or laid off

The benefits timeline is the same as quitting. Health insurance ends at month’s end, COBRA is available, discount ends on your last day.

The difference is unemployment eligibility. If you were terminated for reasons other than gross misconduct, you likely qualify for state unemployment benefits. If you were laid off, you almost certainly qualify.

Do this: File for unemployment in your state as soon as possible. Most states have a one-week waiting period before benefits kick in, so the sooner you file, the sooner that clock starts.

Don’t do this: Don’t skip filing because you think the process is too complicated. Most states have online applications that take 20 to 30 minutes. See how to file for unemployment after being fired.

The Sephora question

Kohl’s has rolled out Sephora shop-in-shop locations in 600+ stores. If you worked in a Sephora at Kohl’s section, you were still a Kohl’s employee with Kohl’s benefits. Your Sephora product knowledge and beauty training don’t transfer to standalone Sephora stores as employment credit, and any product samples or gratis programs end with your Kohl’s employment.

Your 15% Kohl’s discount did apply to Sephora at Kohl’s products while you were employed. That’s gone too.

Amazon returns: does that affect anything?

No. Kohl’s accepts Amazon returns in every store, but that’s a customer-facing partnership, not an employee benefit. It doesn’t affect your post-separation benefits in any way. We mention it only because it comes up in questions from employees who wonder if the Amazon relationship creates any special perks. It doesn’t.

Accessing your info after leaving Kohl’s

MyHR Kohl’s (myhr.kohls.com) is the main portal. For former employees, look for the blue tile labeled “Former Associate Login and W-2 Instructions.” You’ll need your 7-digit Associate Code.

If the portal doesn’t work, W-2s may also be available through H&R Block (Kohl’s has used them for former employee tax document access). Paper W-2s are mailed by January 31.

For general HR questions, call 844-564-5747. Corporate line: 262-703-7000.

For W-2 help, see Kohl’s W-2 for former employees. For all resources, visit the Kohl’s employee resource hub.

Kohl’s discount vs. competitors after separation

The stacking is what made Kohl’s stand out. Without it, the 15% base rate is middle-of-the-pack for department store retail.
