Macy’s Benefits After Termination

With 150 Macy’s stores closing by January 2027, thousands of employees are dealing with this right now. Your situation depends on your role.

Macy’s announced its “Bold New Chapter” plan that includes shuttering 150 locations, with 66 closing in 2025 and 14 more in 2026. Whether you quit, got laid off because your store closed, or were a seasonal hire who wasn’t kept on, the benefits you had and what happens to them afterward varies by your employment type.

Find your section below.

If you are a full-time hourly associate

Health insurance ends on the last day of the month you leave. COBRA is available for up to 18 months at full premium plus 2%. You have 60 days to elect. Marketplace plans at healthcare.gov are the other option.

Your 20% employee discount ends on your last day. This includes the 10% rate on electronics, furniture, mattresses, and rugs. The periodic extra 10% event discounts are also gone. And here’s the part that frustrates people most: you needed a Macy’s credit or prepaid card to use the discount, so if you cancel that card after leaving, there is no residual benefit. The card itself still functions as a regular credit card, but the employee pricing disappears.

Payactiv (earned wage access) stops on separation. If you had a pending Payactiv transfer for wages already earned, check with Payactiv directly to make sure it processes before your final paycheck.

Your 401(k) stays in the plan. Standard rollover options apply. See what happens to your 401(k) when you quit.

PTO payout follows state law. Macy’s flexible time-off policy means accrual details vary, so check your final paycheck carefully. Call 1-877-493-9207 (Macy’s credit customer service) for discount card questions, or the general HR line for benefits and payroll.

If you are a seasonal worker

Seasonal associates at Macy’s have a very different experience. Most seasonal hires do not receive health insurance, 401(k) access, or any real PTO. What you likely had:

The employee discount. Same 20% (or 10% on certain categories). Ends on your last day or the end of your seasonal contract, whichever comes first.

Payactiv. If you were enrolled, same rules as above.

That’s about it. Seasonal Macy’s workers report being “let go” without notice once the holiday rush ends. If this happened to you and you received no formal termination date, your benefits end on whatever date Macy’s recorded as your last day in the system. Check with HR if you are unsure.

For unemployment: seasonal workers who were not offered continued employment after the season may qualify for unemployment benefits in their state. It depends on how your separation is classified. See how to file for unemployment after being fired.

If you are a salaried or management employee

Salaried employees generally have access to the full benefits package: health, dental, vision, 401(k), life insurance, and the employee discount across all Macy’s Inc. brands (Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Bluemercury, outlets, and .com).

The termination timeline is the same as hourly: health ends at the end of the month, COBRA available for 18 months, 60 days to elect.

The key difference is that salaried employees often have higher 401(k) balances and may have participated in supplemental benefits or deferred compensation plans. If you had any non-standard benefits, request a full separation benefits summary from HR before your last day. These details can be hard to reconstruct after your My Insite (hr.macys.net/insite/) access is deactivated.

If your store is closing

Store closings under the Bold New Chapter plan are treated as layoffs. You should receive:

WARN Act notice. Federal law requires 60 days’ notice for mass layoffs at employers with 100+ workers. If you didn’t get adequate notice, you may be entitled to back pay. State WARN laws may provide additional protections.

Severance. Macy’s has offered severance packages to some employees affected by closures, though terms vary and are not guaranteed. Ask HR for your specific offer in writing.

Unemployment eligibility. Layoffs from store closings generally qualify you for unemployment in every state.

Transfer options. Some associates have been offered transfers to nearby locations. Declining a reasonable transfer may affect unemployment eligibility depending on your state’s rules.

Accessing your information after leaving Macy’s

My Insite (hr.macys.net/insite/) and Employee Connection (employeeconnection.net) are the current-employee portals. Access is deactivated after separation.

For W-2s: Former employees use TheWorkNumber.com. This is the most reliable method. Paper W-2s are also mailed by January 31. W-2 access is the number-one complaint from former Macy’s employees, so don’t wait until tax season to figure out your login. See Macy’s W-2 for former employees.

Password reset: If you still have access, pwr.macys.net uses your Employee ID plus last 4 of your SSN.
