Target Quitting Process

How to Quit Target: What to Do Whether You Just Started or Worked There for Years
You just decided to leave Target. Maybe you already have another job lined up, maybe you are moving, or maybe you have just had enough. Whatever brought you here, what you do in the next few days determines how smoothly things go with your last paycheck, your benefits, and whether Target’s system flags you as rehirable.
Your situation determines your path, so find yours below.
If You Are a Current Team Member Giving Notice
The standard expectation at Target is two weeks’ written notice, though nothing in federal or state law requires it. Target is an at-will employer, and you can technically quit on the spot. But your separation will be coded in Workday, and how you leave directly affects that code.
Here is how to do it:
Talk to your Team Leader (TL) or Executive Team Leader (ETL) first, in person. This is not just politeness. Your direct leader is the one who enters your separation details in the system, and a face-to-face conversation gives you the chance to confirm your exact last day and ask about your rehire status.
After the conversation, follow up in writing. A short email or a note handed to your TL works. Something like: “This is to confirm that my last day at Target will be [date], two weeks from today.” Keep a copy.
Your TL or ETL will process your resignation through Workday (wd5.myworkday.com/target). You do not need to submit anything in Workday yourself for the resignation. Your role is to confirm the details are right.
If You Are Walking Out or Quitting Same-Day
It happens. People reach a breaking point or get a better offer that starts Monday. If you are leaving without notice, here is what to know:
Your TL or the store’s HR ETL will process an immediate separation. You will almost certainly be coded as “not recommended for rehire” or at minimum flagged for the no-notice departure. This does not prevent you from ever working at Target again, but it adds a speed bump. Most stores require at least a 6-month waiting period for no-notice quits before they will consider you.
You are still owed every dollar you earned. Target cannot withhold your final pay because you left without notice. Your check arrives on the next regular payday. If you are using DailyPay, any funds already transferred to you are yours. Unreleased earnings for your final shifts will come through the normal payroll cycle.
If You Are a Seasonal or On-Demand Team Member
Seasonal workers often just stop getting scheduled and assume that means they quit. It does not, at least not officially. Target will eventually process you as a “voluntary resignation” or “job abandonment” depending on how many shifts you miss without communication.
If you are seasonal and want a clean exit, tell your TL you are done. Even a text counts. The difference between a clean seasonal ending and a job-abandonment flag is literally one conversation.
On-demand (formerly “flexible fulfillment”) team members follow the same process as regular team members. Talk to your TL, confirm your last shift, done.
What Happens to Your Target Employee Discount
Your 10% team member discount (plus the 20% wellness discount on produce, activewear, and health items) deactivates the day your employment ends in Workday. If you also have a RedCard, the 5% RedCard discount still works because that is tied to the card, not your employment.
As of April 2026, Target is offering 20% off adult owned-brand apparel as an added team member benefit. If you are still employed when that perk is active, use it before your last day.
Do not use your team member discount after your employment ends. Target’s loss prevention team audits discount usage, and post-employment purchases on a team member number are treated as fraud.

PTO Payout When You Quit Target
Target’s PTO payout depends on your state. In states that treat accrued PTO as earned wages (California, Colorado, Illinois, and several others), Target must pay out your unused balance in your final check regardless of whether you gave notice.
In states without mandatory payout laws, Target’s internal policy determines the payout. Team members who give proper two-week notice and work through it generally receive their accrued PTO. Those who quit without notice may not.
Full-time hourly team members accrue roughly 60 hours per year in their first years, increasing with tenure. That is real money, potentially $900 to $1,400 depending on your pay rate, so it is worth understanding your state’s rules before you walk. For specifics, visit Target PTO policies.

Your Benefits After Leaving Target
Health insurance: Coverage runs through the end of the month in which your employment ends. Quit on June 2, you are covered through June 30. A COBRA notice arrives in the mail within 14 days of your coverage ending. COBRA lets you continue the same plan for up to 18 months, but you pick up the full cost.
401(k): Target matches dollar-for-dollar up to 5% with 100% immediate vesting. That means every dollar Target contributed is yours, no matter when you leave. Your 401(k) stays in the plan until you move it. Roll it to a new employer plan or an IRA whenever you want.
DailyPay: Access to earned wages through DailyPay stops when your employment ends. Any pending transfers will still process. Check your DailyPay balance before your last day and transfer what you want.
Dream to Be education benefit: If you are enrolled in a degree program through Target’s education assistance (covering 500+ programs at 40+ schools), check with the program administrator about whether your current semester is covered after separation. Typically, you need to be employed through the end of the term.

Rehire Eligibility at Target
Target’s rehire policy is simpler than most retailers:
- Quit with two weeks’ notice, good standing: Eligible to reapply immediately.
- Quit without notice: Typically a 6-month waiting period. Some stores will consider you sooner if there is a need.
- Terminated for cause: Depends on the reason. Performance issues usually mean 6 to 12 months. Policy violations (theft, harassment) can mean a permanent block.
Your separation code lives in Workday. When you apply at any Target location, the hiring manager can see it. Before you leave, it is worth asking your ETL what they plan to enter. You cannot change it after the fact, but at least you will know where you stand.
Before Your Last Day: Don’t Forget These
Download your pay stubs. Once your Workday access is cut, you lose the ability to view them online. Go to Workday > Pay > Pay Stubs and save or screenshot your recent ones. For W-2s after you leave, use Paperless Employee at paperlessemployee.com/target.
Confirm your address in Workday. Your final paycheck (if paper) and W-2 will go to the address on file. Update it now if you are moving.
Return your equipment. Name badge, walkie-talkie, box cutter, red shirt if store-issued (most are not). Your store key or alarm code access gets deactivated by your ETL.
Note down HR’s number: 1-800-394-1885. You may need it for payroll questions after you leave. The Target HR contact guide has the full breakdown by issue type.
Leaving Target is not complicated if you handle the basics. Give notice if you can, confirm your PTO situation, download your records, and make sure your separation code is what you expect. Everything else falls into place.
