Walmart Employee Benefits

What Benefits Does Walmart Actually Offer?
About half of Walmart’s 1.6 million U.S. associates don’t realize they qualify for benefits beyond the employee discount. The full package covers health insurance, a 401(k) with company match, tuition-free college, life insurance, parental leave, and more. Eligibility depends on your employment status and how long you’ve been with the company, and most benefits kick in sooner than people expect.
You can manage everything through OneWalmart (one.walmart.com) or the Me@Walmart app. Benefits enrollment, plan details, and life event changes all live under the “My Benefits” section. If you’re having trouble logging in, check out the Walmart login portals guide for troubleshooting steps.
Who Qualifies for Walmart Benefits?
Full-time associates (34+ hours per week) become eligible for most benefits on the first day of the month after 60 days of employment. Part-time associates qualify for a smaller set of benefits, but it’s more than most people think. Here’s how it breaks down:
Benefit | Full-Time | Part-Time |
Medical/dental/vision | Yes (after 60 days) | Limited medical (after 60 days) |
401(k) with match | Yes (after 90 days) | Yes (after 90 days) |
Associate discount (10%) | Yes (after 91 days) | Yes (after 91 days) |
Live Better U (tuition) | Yes (day one) | Yes (day one) |
Life insurance | Yes | Basic only |
Parental leave (paid) | Yes (12 months tenure) | No |
PTO accrual | Yes (day one) | Yes (day one) |
Associate Stock Purchase | Yes | Yes |
The 60-day waiting period for health coverage trips people up. If you start on March 15, your coverage begins May 1. Don’t confuse this with the 91-day wait for the Walmart employee discount, which runs on a separate clock.
How Does Walmart Health Insurance Work?
Walmart offers multiple medical plan tiers, and the premiums are lower than what most retail employers charge. Associates can choose from HRA (Health Reimbursement Account) and HSA (Health Savings Account) plans, with premiums starting around $30.50 per pay period for associate-only coverage on the lowest-cost option.
Dental and vision are separate enrollments. Dental plans run roughly $7-15 per pay period depending on the tier. Vision is typically under $5.
All plans include free preventive care, and prescription drug coverage is part of every medical plan. Walmart’s pharmacy benefit means you’ll often pay less filling prescriptions at a Walmart pharmacy than at outside pharmacies. This is a real perk if you’re already picking up meds on your break.
One thing to keep in mind: Walmart runs open enrollment once per year, usually in October for coverage starting January 1. Outside of open enrollment, you can only change your plan if you have a qualifying life event like marriage, the birth of a child, or losing other coverage. Miss it and you’re locked in until next year.
Does Walmart Offer a 401(k) Match?
Yes. After 90 days of employment, both full-time and part-time associates can enroll in Walmart’s 401(k) plan. Walmart matches 6% of your contributions dollar for dollar, up to 6% of your eligible pay. That’s a strong match compared to most retailers.
The match vests immediately, meaning the money Walmart contributes is yours from day one of enrollment. You don’t have to wait years to “earn” the match, which is unusual in retail. Many associates leave money on the table by not enrolling or not contributing at least 6%. Even if you can only do 2% or 3%, that’s still free money from the company.
Walmart also offers an Associate Stock Purchase Plan (ASPP) where you can buy Walmart stock at a 15% discount through payroll deductions. The company matches the first $1,800 you invest each year with an additional 15%, which works out to a $270 annual bonus if you max that out. It’s a separate benefit from the 401(k), and you can do both.
What Is Live Better U and How Much Does It Cost?
Live Better U is Walmart’s tuition assistance program, and it’s one of the strongest in retail. Associates pay $1 per day for tuition, books, and fees at partner schools. Walmart covers the rest. The program includes high school completion, college prep, certificates, associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and some graduate programs.
Eligibility starts on day one of employment for both full-time and part-time associates. You don’t need to wait. Partner schools include the University of Arizona, Purdue University Global, and several others. Over 100 programs are available.
The catch: you need to stay employed at Walmart while enrolled. If you leave or get terminated, you lose the benefit going forward, but you keep whatever credits you’ve already earned. There’s no obligation to stay at Walmart after finishing your degree, either. Some associates use it as a path out of retail, and Walmart is fine with that.
How Does Walmart PTO Work?
Walmart uses a dual PTO system: Regular PTO and Protected PTO (PPTO). Regular PTO is for planned time off like vacations. Protected PTO covers unexpected absences and, when used correctly, prevents attendance points from being added to your record.
First-year full-time associates earn up to 48 hours of PPTO and 72 hours of regular PTO, for a combined total of 120 hours (15 days). That number climbs with tenure, reaching up to 304 hours (38 days) for associates with 20+ years. Check the Walmart PTO policies page for the full accrual schedule.
Up to 80 hours of combined PTO carries over to the next year. Anything above 80 hours gets cashed out at your current pay rate. PPTO gets applied before regular PTO during the carryover calculation.
The attendance points system is worth understanding here. You accumulate 5 points in a rolling 6-month period and you’re terminated. A late arrival is 0.5 points, a half-shift absence is 1 point, and a no-call/no-show is 2 points. PPTO is your main defense against these, so use it strategically. Don’t burn your PPTO on planned days off when regular PTO would work just as well.
What Other Benefits Should You Know About?
A few benefits that tend to fly under the radar:
Parental leave: Full-time associates with at least 12 months of service get 16 weeks paid for birth mothers and 6 weeks paid for all other new parents, including adoption and foster placement.
Life insurance: Walmart provides a basic life insurance policy at no cost. You can buy additional coverage during open enrollment.
EAP (Employee Assistance Program): Free confidential counseling sessions for you and your household members. Covers mental health, financial counseling, legal consultations, and more. You get a set number of sessions per issue per year.
Associate Discount Center: Beyond the 10% in-store discount, Walmart partners with outside companies for deals on travel, cell phones, car rentals, and entertainment. Access this through OneWalmart. The August 2025 expansion of the grocery discount to all food categories year-round was big news, too. Previously, only fresh produce was covered year-round.
Paid bereavement: Three days for immediate family members.
Short-term disability: Available after one year for full-time associates. Pays a percentage of your salary if you can’t work due to illness or injury.
If you’re thinking about leaving Walmart, it’s worth understanding what happens to your benefits after termination and how COBRA works for continuing health coverage. You should also review your options around your 401(k) after quitting.
