PetSmart full-time associates start with 80 hours (2 weeks) of vacation per year, increasing to 120 hours (3 weeks) after 5 years and 160 hours (4 weeks) after 10 years. On top of that, you get 16 discretionary hours per year for personal use. That puts PetSmart in the middle of the pack for specialty retail, better than GameStop or Dollar General but below Publix’s 176-hour bank.

How Much PTO Do I Actually Earn Per Pay Period?

Your per-pay-period accrual depends on your tenure bracket. For a full-time associate in years 0-4, the 80 annual hours divide across 26 biweekly pay periods, giving you roughly 3.08 hours per check. At the 5-9 year bracket, that jumps to about 4.62 hours per period. After 10 years, you accrue roughly 6.15 hours per check.

You can track your accrual on HR Connect at hrconnect.petsmart.com or through ADP at my.adp.com (registration code: petm-pets). Both systems show your current balance and per-period accrual rate.

Is PetSmart PTO Use-It-or-Lose-It?

Yes, for vacation and discretionary hours. PetSmart operates a use-it-or-lose-it policy for vacation and the 16 discretionary hours. If you do not use them by the end of the year, you forfeit them. Plan accordingly, especially in Q4 when PTO approval gets harder.

Sick time works differently. You earn 4 hours of sick time per month, and unused sick hours roll over year to year up to a maximum of 120 hours. This rollover is your safety net for extended illness, so there is less urgency to use sick time before year-end.

The use-it-or-lose-it rule makes it important to schedule your vacation throughout the year rather than trying to take it all in December when holiday staffing needs make approvals difficult.

How Do I Request Time Off?

PTO requests go through HR Connect (hrconnect.petsmart.com). Log in with your User ID and password, navigate to the time-off section, and submit your request. Your manager receives a notification and approves or denies based on department staffing.

For grooming salon, pet hotel, and training associates, scheduling is tighter because these departments require specific certifications and cannot easily substitute general floor staff. If you work in one of these specialized areas, give extra lead time on PTO requests.

General guidance: two weeks of notice for a day or two off, four weeks for a full week. Holiday season (November through January) is the hardest time to get approved at any PetSmart location.

What About Part-Time Associates?

Part-time PetSmart employees accrue PTO at a lower rate than full-time. The exact rate depends on your average weekly hours. In states with mandatory paid sick leave, part-time associates receive sick time regardless of their classification.

If you are part-time and regularly working 30+ hours weekly, check whether you qualify for full-time reclassification. The jump from part-time to full-time PTO accrual is significant, and full-time status also opens up health insurance, the 401(k) match, and other benefits.

Does PetSmart Pay Out Unused PTO When I Leave?

State law determines this. In states that require payout of accrued vacation (California, Illinois, Massachusetts, and others), PetSmart includes your unused vacation balance in your final paycheck. In states without a payout requirement, company policy applies.

Remember the use-it-or-lose-it rule: any vacation or discretionary hours you did not use before leaving are typically forfeited in states that allow it. Sick time is generally not paid out at separation regardless of state.

Screenshot your PTO balance from HR Connect or ADP before your last day. Access is revoked at separation. For more on what to expect, see the PetSmart PTO payout when you quit page.

Holidays and Seasonal Scheduling

PetSmart stores are open on most holidays, and the holiday season (November through January) is the busiest time of year. PTO approvals during this period are difficult to get, especially in the grooming salon and pet hotel departments where holiday boarding reservations fill up weeks in advance.

Outside of the holiday rush, PTO approval is generally reasonable with adequate notice. Summer months tend to be busy for grooming but less so for retail floor staff, so your department matters.

PetSmart does not publish a fixed list of paid holidays for all employees. Full-time associates typically receive holiday pay for major holidays, but confirm with your manager which holidays qualify at your location.

Grooming, Hotel, and Training Staff: PTO Realities

If you work in the PetSmart grooming salon, pet hotel, or dog training department, your PTO works the same as any other PetSmart associate, but approval is harder because these departments require specific certifications. A general floor associate can be covered by almost anyone. A groomer, pet hotel attendant, or trainer cannot.

Plan PTO requests around your department’s peak periods. Grooming is busiest before holidays (people want their dogs looking good for family photos). Pet hotels are slammed during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and summer travel season. Training classes run on fixed schedules, and your absence means a class may need to be cancelled or covered by another certified trainer.

Giving four or more weeks of notice for PTO in these departments is not excessive. It gives your manager time to arrange coverage or adjust the appointment schedule.

The Pet Perks That Supplement Your PTO Package

PetSmart’s employee benefits include some perks that are unique to pet retail and affect your overall compensation picture:

Free monthly services including a dog wash, teeth cleaning, and nail grinding in the grooming salon. A free 6-week puppy or beginner training class. 50% off select proprietary brands (Authority, Simply Nourish, Only Natural Pet food and litter). 15% off most other products and services. Discounted pet insurance.

These perks do not directly change your PTO, but for pet owners on the PetSmart staff (which is most of them), the savings on pet care add real value on top of your hourly pay and time off. For full details on the discount program, see the PetSmart employee discount page.

401(k) and Financial Benefits

PetSmart matches your 401(k) at 50 cents per dollar on the first 6% of pay. The match vests at 20% per year, meaning you are fully vested after 5 years. That vesting schedule is slower than Target (immediate) or Aldi (immediate), so keep it in mind if you are thinking about leaving before the 5-year mark.

The Ally Program provides behavioral health support for associates not enrolled in medical benefits. This is separate from PTO but relevant if you need mental health support and do not have insurance through PetSmart.
