Walgreens Final Paycheck Laws

With Walgreens closing hundreds of stores through 2026, laying off 628+ employees in early 2026 alone, and restructuring under Sycamore Partners’ private equity ownership, thousands of people are leaving the company right now. If you’re one of them, don’t assume your final paycheck will arrive without you tracking it. Walgreens’ HR systems are stretched thin, and former employees lose portal access fast.

Here’s how to make sure you get paid everything you’re owed.

The Portal Problem: People Central Goes Dark Quickly

Walgreens uses People Central (accessed through WBA Worldwide at wbaworldwide.wba.com) for payroll, W-2s, and benefits. The catch: your OneID login gets deactivated shortly after separation, sometimes within days. Once that happens, you can’t check your final pay stub, confirm your direct deposit status, or verify your mailing address.

Do this: Before your last day, log into People Central and screenshot or download your most recent pay stubs, your direct deposit information, and your personal profile (especially your mailing address). Print your last 3-4 pay stubs for comparison. Write down your employee ID.

Don’t do this: Don’t assume you’ll be able to log in “next week” to check on things. Portal deactivation is fast and there’s no self-service reactivation for former employees.

When Your Final Paycheck Is Due

Walgreens operates in all 50 states, so timing depends on where you work.

Do this: Find your state in this quick reference and mark the date on your calendar.

Involuntary Termination or Store Closure

If Walgreens fired you, laid you off, or closed your store:

Same-day states: California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana. Your check should be in hand on your last day.

Next-payday states: Most others, including Illinois (where Walgreens is headquartered in Deerfield), New York, Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania. Walgreens pays biweekly, so this could be up to 14 days.

Voluntary Resignation

California with 72+ hours’ notice: Final day of work. California without notice: Within 72 hours. Almost every other state: Next regular payday.

Don’t do this: Don’t confuse “store closing” with “voluntary resignation.” If your store closed and you were offered a transfer you declined, Walgreens may code your separation differently depending on the circumstances. Ask HR how your separation is being classified, because it affects both your paycheck deadline and your unemployment eligibility.

PTO Payout: What Walgreens Owes (and What Changed)

In November 2025, Walgreens eliminated 6 paid holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day). If you’re separating now, your accrued PTO balance is all that’s left.

Do this: Check your state’s payout law. In states that require vacation payout (California, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, Massachusetts, Nebraska, and others), Walgreens must include your unused PTO in the final check. In other states, Walgreens follows its internal policy, which has been in flux during the ownership transition.

Don’t do this: Don’t assume your PTO balance will automatically appear on the final stub. With the scale of layoffs and system transitions happening under Sycamore Partners, errors are more likely than usual. Verify the number on your stub against what People Central showed before your access was cut.

How to Reach Walgreens Payroll After You Leave

Since portal access evaporates, you’ll need to use these contact methods:

Walgreens HR: 1-800-825-5467 Email: askhr@walgreens.com Have ready: Your employee ID (OneID), store number, last working date, and the last four of your SSN.

Do this: Call during weekday mornings. Wait times are long, especially with the volume of closures and layoffs. Be patient but persistent. If you can’t get through, try email and give them 3-5 business days to respond.

Don’t do this: Don’t accept “it’s being processed” as a final answer if you’re already past your state’s legal deadline. Get a specific date and a reference number.

Filing a Wage Claim

If Walgreens has missed the deadline and repeated calls to HR haven’t produced a check:

Do this: File a wage claim with your state’s Department of Labor. In Illinois (Walgreens’ home state), you can file through the Illinois Department of Labor online. California claims go through the DLSE. Most states have an online process.

In states with penalty provisions, every day past the deadline costs Walgreens money. California penalties run up to 30 days of daily wages. Even in states without automatic penalties, the labor department can compel payment and investigate.

Don’t do this: Don’t wait months hoping it resolves itself. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to reconstruct records. File within 30 days of the missed deadline if you can.

Watch for Illegal Deductions

With cost-cutting under PE ownership, some Walgreens locations have reportedly deducted uniform costs or other items from final checks. Most states prohibit this without explicit written authorization.

Do this: Compare your final pay stub to a previous one. If you see any new deductions, challenge them through HR and, if necessary, include them in your wage claim.

Don’t do this: Don’t sign any separation paperwork that includes a blanket authorization for deductions from your final check without reading it carefully. You’re not required to sign anything as a condition of receiving your legally owed wages.
