Unlike department store competitors that are shrinking rapidly (Macy’s is closing 150 stores by 2027), Kohl’s store count has held relatively stable at around 1,100 locations. That stability means your PTO accrual is less likely to be disrupted by a sudden store closure or layoff, which has become a real concern at chains like Macy’s and Walgreens. Kohl’s has its own identity questions to work through (department store? off-price? Amazon returns hub?), but for now, the PTO and benefits structure remains intact.

Here is what you need to know, and what to avoid.

Your Kohl’s PTO Checklist

  • Confirm your FT/PT classification on MyHR Kohl’s (myhr.kohls.com)
  • Check your 7-digit Associate Code (needed for all portal access)
  • Review your current PTO balance under Self Service > Payroll
  • Know the blackout periods at your store (typically late Oct through Dec)
  • Understand how the 15% employee discount stacks with Kohl’s Cash for purchase planning
  • Submit PTO requests with at least 2 weeks of lead time
  • Screenshot your PTO balance if you are considering leaving

How PTO Accrues at Kohl’s

Kohl’s PTO accrues based on your tenure and whether you work full-time or part-time. The general structure follows standard retail patterns: more years with the company means more PTO. Full-time associates earn at a higher rate.

Kohl’s does not publish a detailed public accrual table, so your best source for exact numbers is the PTO balance and accrual rate shown in MyHR at myhr.kohls.com. Log in with your 7-digit Associate Code, go to Self Service > Payroll, and look at your per-period accrual.

Part-time associates earn PTO at a reduced rate. In states with mandatory paid sick leave, part-time workers receive sick time regardless of their classification.

Do This / Don’t Do This: Kohl’s PTO

Do this: Submit PTO requests as early as possible, especially for time off between October and December. Kohl’s does the majority of its annual business during the holiday season, and scheduling is tight. A request submitted 4-6 weeks out has a much better chance of approval than one submitted 2 weeks before.

Don’t do this: Assume your PTO request will be auto-approved. Managers have full discretion, and staffing needs take priority. If you need a specific day off for a personal obligation, talk to your manager in person after submitting the digital request.

Do this: Use your employee discount strategically. Kohl’s gives a 15% associate discount that stacks with Kohl’s Cash and customer coupons. The effective discount can reach 30% or more. Some associates plan their PTO around major Kohl’s Cash earning events to combine time off with big shopping trips.

Don’t do this: Forget about your Kohl’s Cash expiration dates. They expire, and if you earned them during a promotional period, you need to redeem them within the specified window. This is not directly PTO-related, but it comes up often enough in employee discussions about planning time off around sales events.

Do this: Check your PTO balance at least monthly. Payroll errors happen, and catching a discrepancy early is much easier to fix than discovering it months later.

Don’t do this: Wait until your last day to check your PTO balance if you are leaving. Former employee login at myhr.kohls.com sometimes fails, and getting your balance information after separation requires calling HR at 844-564-5747.

Holidays at Kohl’s

Kohl’s stores are open on most holidays, which means holiday scheduling is standard for retail associates. Full-time employees typically receive holiday pay for major holidays.

Kohl’s has been open on Thanksgiving Day for Black Friday shopping in recent years, though the retail industry has been trending toward closing on Thanksgiving. Check with your store manager for the current year’s holiday schedule, as this can change annually.

If you work a holiday shift, verify on your next pay stub that the holiday premium was applied correctly. Payroll errors on holiday pay are not uncommon, especially at stores that are still adjusting staffing around the Sephora and Amazon returns operations. Catching an error within the same pay period makes corrections much simpler than disputing it weeks later.

The Amazon Returns Factor

Every Kohl’s store now accepts Amazon returns, and this has changed the staffing dynamics at many locations. The Amazon partnership brings additional foot traffic, which can affect your PTO in a roundabout way: busier stores have tighter scheduling, and managers at high-traffic locations may be more hesitant to approve time off during periods when Amazon return volume spikes (post-holiday season in particular).

On the flip side, the Amazon partnership has helped stabilize Kohl’s business at a time when other department stores are contracting. A more stable business means more predictable scheduling and less risk of the kind of sudden store closures that disrupt PTO at competitors.

Sephora Scheduling Considerations

Over 600 Kohl’s locations now have Sephora shop-in-shop sections. If you work in the Sephora area, your scheduling may follow different patterns than the main Kohl’s floor. Sephora sections typically require dedicated staffing, which can limit flexibility for PTO in those departments.

If you are a Sephora associate within Kohl’s, your PTO policy is still Kohl’s corporate policy, not Sephora’s. But department-specific staffing needs may affect approval rates for time-off requests.

Part-Time PTO at Kohl’s

A large portion of the Kohl’s workforce is part-time, and part-time associates face specific PTO realities. Your accrual rate is lower than full-time, and your total annual PTO will be smaller. In states without mandatory paid sick leave, part-time associates may receive very limited time off.

Do this: If you are part-time and regularly working 30+ hours per week, check whether you qualify for reclassification to full-time. The jump in PTO accrual and benefits eligibility can be significant.

Don’t do this: Assume that working occasional 40-hour weeks qualifies you as full-time. Classification is based on your scheduled status, not individual week variations. You need a consistent pattern of full-time hours and a formal status change in the system.

Kohl’s has historically relied on a flexible part-time workforce, especially during off-peak months. If your hours fluctuate seasonally, your PTO accrual will reflect the slower periods even if you worked full-time hours during the busy season.

When You Leave Kohl’s

PTO payout depends on state law. Former associates can access some HR information through the former associate login on myhr.kohls.com (look for the blue tile labeled “Former Associate Login and W-2 Instructions”). If that does not work, H&R Block may also have your W-2 information, and you can call HR at 844-564-5747 or corporate at 262-703-7000.
